After decades of stand-up, Wright is still the surreal deal

There is nothing quite like a conversation with comedian Steven Wright. Famous for his deadpan surrealism, he has a startlingly expressive laugh and a gift for strange tangents. The Burlington native, who is 59, has also had a storied career, starting with his 1982 appearance on Johnny Carson’s “Tonight Show.” He’s made short films and popped up in unexpected cameos in movies like “Reservoir Dogs” and “So I Married an Axe Murderer.” But mostly he has stuck with stand-up and, in his private time, painting. He added “producer” to his credits for the fourth season of Louis C.K.’s “Louie,” and he’s currently working on the fifth, which premieres April 9 on FX. Wright performs at the Wilbur Theatre Friday and Saturday. We spoke with Wright by phone about stand-up, art, and stencils.
