Jenny Zigrino is juggling a lot of comic sensibilities these days. When she comes to The Comedy Studio on April 15, she will do so dressed as King George III, hosting a historical late night talk show called “History Tonight.” Rob Crean, whose day job as a tour guide on the Freedom Trail makes him familiar with the garb, will play George’s sidekick, former Prime Minister George Grenville. All the comics on the bill will also dress as historical figures.
“When I first moved to Boston for college,” she said, speaking by Zoom, “for Halloween, [I] dressed up as Amadeus, and everybody thought I was Thomas Jefferson, which I was pretty mad about.”
Zigrino grew up a history buff, splitting time between Minnesota and Boston before committing to MassArt pursuing comedy in the Boston club scene. She hosted a show called “Badass Bitches of History” on Comedy Central’s digital channel in 2018, chronicling contributions of mostly unheralded women. She also loved doing character work – one of her earliest creations was a short film in which she played Liz Fang, an English rock star trying to make a new life in Boston.
In the clubs, her stand-up has been more personal, but she wants to get back to some of those early elements she loved so much. “I’m just gonna embrace it,” she said. “I’ve always loved history, so why not just do it?”
