And most art forms aren\u2019t improved by uninvited audience participation. An actor playing Hamlet might be thrown by an eager fan trying to answer \u201cto be or not to be?\u201d and a singer\/songwriter might be perturbed by a someone in the front row holding up their phone to record that touching ballad.<\/p>\n But for a stand-up comedian, dealing with a vocal audience<\/a> is often just part of the job, for better or worse. Sometimes it\u2019s magic, sometimes it ruins the vibe. More recently, audiences have come to expect more interaction thanks to the influx of crowd work videos on social media. Those were already on the rise pre-COVID, but the effect intensified as more people experienced comedy online during lockdown. For working comics, the results have been mixed.<\/p>\n
