Comedy Studio set to reopen in Somerville’s Union Square

SOMERVILLE — The Comedy Studio will officially open for business at its new Union Square location at Bow Market on Thursday afternoon with a ribbon-cutting followed by an invite-only stand-up show with Jenny Zigrino, Tony V, DJ Hazard, Eugene Mirman, and Liam McGurk. The club has been in “soft opening” phase since Sept. 6, working out some of the kinks of a new business, and will be open to customers again on Friday. The Studio closed its original Harvard Square location of 21 years in December.

The Comedy Studio has always been a work in progress, befitting its reputation as a club where young comedians get their start and veterans work out new material. That was true on the first night of the soft opening. The walls were bare and black, not yet hung with the colorful painting in the green room or the Johnny Carson-style curtain that will soundproof the back of the room. The photo booth out front stopped working after a few rounds of pictures, and fans cheered when a string of decorative lights fell to the floor after the show.
